We are still a young region, one of six with a constellation of twelve local councils that jointly and collectively stand for one identity. As the first region to celebrate the Region of Culture title, our culture calendar shall also feature projects and events that bring together the communities within our region.
These are some of the highlights from this year’s region of culture calendar of events.
Sebħ in-Nofsinhar
This traditional drama piece purposely written for the region of culture project in a contemporary vein shall present a drive through the region’s history. Sebħ in-Nofsinhar shall also serve the purpose of an overview of the Region’s 2023 cultural programme for the Region of Culture project.
Official Concert at Chinese Garden of Serenity, Santa Lucija
This shall be the main musical event of the Region of Culture title showcasing local artists with a repertoire inspired by the region’s heraldic coat of arms featuring sea and sun. The concert shall be happening at the Chinese Garden of Serenity.
Documenting the Region’s Identity
The region shall be presenting a series of features, jointly with CVC media, documenting local trades and craftsmen that are still active in various localities within the region. This project shall focus on current practice and the future perspective of these trades. The documentaries shall be airing on Sundays, on national television, throughout 2023.
Annual Good Friday Symposium
As in previous years, this cultural event shall continue to probe the relevance and significance of Good Friday traditions and celebrations to the region’s communities. This year’s edition shall focus on arts and crafts that are an integral part of Malta’s Good Friday traditions.
